Two companies in Armenia receive permits to launch 5G networks

YEREVAN, May 8. /ARKA/. After reviewing the results of tenders announced for the launch of 5G technology networks, Armenia’s Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC) gave permission to Telecom Armenia company to use 700 MHz radio frequency (2 x 20 MHz segment) and MTS Armenia to use 800 MHz radio frequency (2x10 MHz segment).
According to the PSRC, the mobile broadband access to 5G networks is to be launched within 2 years in major cities of the country - Yerevan, Gyumri, Vanadzor through the Internet of Things/IoT technology.
The quality of mobile broadband Internet access in closed (indoor) premises is to be improved, the level of reliability and security of the communication networks is to be increased and the security systems is to be upgraded.
"In order to strengthen the defense capability of the Republic of Armenia, the existing communications infrastructure will be developed and expanded,’ the PSRC said in a statement. It said also that a training laboratory for telecommunications specialties will be established in a state-run higher educational institution.
It said the tenders for the mentioned frequencies earned the government over 2.2 billion drams as a lump sum (permission granting). In future, the government is expected to receive about 1.2 bln yearly (from the use of these frequencies). Thus, the annual revenues from the use of frequencies are to grow from the current 8bln drams to over 9,5bln drams.
Team Telecom Armenia provides Internet, digital TV, mobile and fixed communication services. In March this year, the company's CEO Hayk Yesayan announced plans to launch 5G network in Yerevan and a number of regional centers within two years.
