YEREVAN, 7 September. /ARKA/.The UNDP in Armenia and Armenia’s government have launched today a $3 million worth project designed to enhance development of agro-tourism in some 60 rural communities across the country. The project that will run for three years is financed by the government of Russia. The objective of the project is to cut poverty.
Speaking at a special ceremony marling the start of the project UNDP Resident Representative in Armenia Bradley Buzetto said Armenia has a fantastic opportunity for the development of agro-tourism. He then thanked the governments of Armenia and Russia for their partnership aimed at supporting rural communities in Armenia.
Armenian Territorial Administration Minister David Lokyan said this is the second such project implemented with the financial support of Russia. The first one, with a $5 million budget is being now effectively implemented in the Tavush region.
Over the past 15 years, UNDP has provided support to thousands of people in more than 150 communities across Armenia with the aim of increasing access to new opportunities in the field of employment and income in sectors such as agro-processing, food processing and construction.
It helped build about 100 greenhouses for the most vulnerable groups in rural communities as well as build and renovate irrigation, drinking water and gas infrastructure in over 50 communities, as well as schools, kindergartens and community centers. -0-
