YEREVAN, December 24. /ARKA/. The unseasonably warm weather across Armenia with temperatures rising up to 10 degrees Celsius in the capital Yerevan and even higher in the southern and northeastern regions of the country, enjoyed by Armenian citizens is very likely to have negatively affect farmers, Deputy Economy Minister Artak Kamalyan told reporters on Tuesday.

According to the deputy minister, warm weather means a drop in crops next year, first of all due to the lack of irrigation water, and if the warm weather persists into January, some trees will bloom.

Kamalyan said release of irrigation water from  Lake Sevan will not resolve the problem. He said also although this year as much as 140 million cubic meters of water were released from the lake, a substantial volume, almost half of it,  is lost before reaching the fields.

He said the Water Committee is working to resolve this problem, and the ministry, for its part, should take active measures to encourage farmers to apply more effective irrigation systems, particularly, drip irrigation.

"It is necessary to use drip irrigation systems, which will not only save water resources, but also significantly increase productivity," Kamalyan said. -0-
