YEREVAN, September 18. /ARKA/. The European Union expects the incentives established for Armenian goods to come into effect very soon. EU Ambassador to Armenia Vasilis Maragos stated this in Vanadzor, emphasizing that "relations between the European Union and Armenia have never been closer, and European institutions are working to make them even more tangible."
"Following some very tough, coercive measures taken by Armenia's important northern partner regarding exports to that country, the EU has strengthened its support for trade," the EU Ambassador said, highlighting the trade incentives proposed by Brussels, which will allow many Armenian goods to enter the EU market duty-free.
According to Radio Azatutyun, the EU is discussing new trade preferences that will allow several hundred types of Armenian goods to be exported to the European market duty-free. Brussels offered Armenia these benefits in the face of Russian restrictions, in order to help exporters find new markets. The preferential regime is expected to be in effect for a limited period and will cover a range of Armenian exports.
"This week, we saw the European Parliament vote in favor of this proposal, and we expect it to be formalized very soon," Maragos said.
On Tuesday, the European Parliament approved a proposal by the European Commission to introduce temporary measures to liberalize trade for products of Armenian origin.
The measure provides for a temporary suspension of import duties on a wide range of goods of Armenian origin, including certain agricultural products subject to tariff quotas. According to the EU Council, the measures will liberalize approximately 80% of Armenia's exports to the European Union.
The preferential regime will be in effect for two years from the date the relevant regulation enters into force. It also provides for protective measures for the EU market in the event of a negative impact of imports on European producers.
After the formal adoption of the position by the European Parliament, the document must be approved by the EU Council.
The regulation will enter into force the day after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU.
Restrictions on the supply of Armenian products to Russia
Since the end of May, Russia has been gradually introducing restrictions on the supply of certain products from Armenia, citing violations of phytosanitary requirements. The restrictions include flowers, mineral water, certain beverages and alcoholic beverages, vegetables, fruits, berries, grapes, potatoes, dried fruits, and later, live fish and fish products, as well as dairy products.
The restrictions also include a ban on the transit of products of Armenian origin through Russia to other EAEU countries.
