Armenia celebrates Independence Day
GYUMRI, September 21 /ARKA/. Armenia is celebrating today the 28th anniversary of the country's independence. On that day in 1991, by a decision of the Supreme Council of the republic, a referendum was held on secession from the USSR and the creation of an independent state.

The popular vote was held in the wake of the rise of the national movement.  About 99% of the country's citizens with voting rights voted for independence. Independence was officially declared by parliament on September 23.

This year for the first time the main events and the gala concert are being hosted by Armenia’s second-largest city of Gyumri, which is the capital of the northern province of Shirak.

The celebrations started in Gyumri Central Park, where Yerevan-based bars and cafes have opened separate pavilions. Seven music venues have been installed in the city center for musicians of different styles - vinyl, rock, and electronic music, classical, Armenian folk, pop and jazz music.

The central Shahumyan Street is hosting an open-air exhibition of the works by artists and craftsmen representing exclusively the Shirak region. The Rustaveli Street has a display of regional crafts in separate pavilions. Gastro pavilions are opened on Abovyan Street. The Vardanants Square has been transformed into a children's town, in which events are being held for children of all age groups.

In the evening, at 19:00, the Vardanants Square will host the gala concert with the participation of famous Armenian and foreign stars, including the Armenian group Supacooks, German DJs Dole & Kom and the American group Capital Cities. The events will end at 23:00 with festive fireworks.

Also a balloon festival will be held with pilots who will come from Russia, Bulgaria, Georgia and Brazil with their own balloons.

Mayor of Gyumri Samvel Balasanyan said after the 1988 earthquake, major events of this magnitude were practically not held in the city. He said Gyumri expects as many as 15 thousand visitors, and all hotels in the city have been booked.

The government has released this year 220 million drams on all Independence Day events, down from 425 million drams released last year.

In 2020, all major Independence Day events will be hosted in the third-largest town of Vanadzor. Then, other regional administrative centers will be hosting the event. The idea is to give boost to development of tourism industry across the country.

Modern Armenia is referred to as  the Third Republic. Before it were the First Republic (1918-1920) and the Armenian Soviet republic (1920-1991). The Armenian state was restored on the ruins of the Russian Empire at the beginning of the 20th century. Prior to that, the Armenian people waged a centuries-long struggle for their existence and the preservation of national identity in the absence of their own state.

For more than a quarter of a century of independence, the country has had four presidents and 16 prime ministers. -0-.
