YEREVAN, September 19. /ARKA/. The government of Armenia approved today a proposal to open embassies in Israel (with residence in Tel Aviv) and Ethiopia (with residence in Addis Ababa).

Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan recalled that  diplomatic relations with Israel had been established in  1992, adding that Armenia wants to have embassy in that country because of Israel's being an important geopolitical player  in the Middle East region. He said Israel's role is significant in the build up of stability across that region.

He said the mission of the embassy in Tel-Aviv will be to ensure and preserve Armenia's centuries-old presence in the region, its rich historical and cultural heritage there, as well as assist the Armenian Apostolic Church on the level of government.

According to him, the opening of the embassy will also help in deepening relations with Israel and will become an incentive for advancing cooperation in a number of areas.

"Now we are represented in Israel by a non-resident ambassador and believe that diplomatic representation is necessary to increase involvement and represent our interests in a country where there is a wide range of bilateral issues that require constant presence and diplomatic work," Mnatsakanyan said.

At the same time, he said it was still difficult to say exactly when the embassy will open and ambassador will be appointed, since it will be necessary to go through mutual coordination procedures. He added that both countries are discussing also the opening of Israeli embassy in Armenia.

As for Ethiopia, the minister noted that this country is one of the political and diplomatic centers of Africa, which houses the headquarters of the African Union.

"The opening of embassy in Addis Ababa will allow developing cooperation with the entire African Union. Thus, we will be able not only develop close contacts with Ethiopia, but also with other states of the African continent," Mnatsakanyan said. Today, the only Armenian embassy in Africa is in Egypt. --0—
