YEREVAN, August 27. /ARKA/. Second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan has been arrested for two months.
"The Anti-Corruption Court (presided over by Judge S. Dadoyan) fully granted the investigator's motion and ordered arrest as a preventive measure against R.K.," the Anti-Corruption Committee reported.
The day before, Marina Ohanjanyan, press secretary for the Anti-Corruption Committee of Armenia, told Novosti-Armenia that a motion to apply arrest as a preventive measure against second President Robert Kocharyan had been submitted to the Anti-Corruption Court.
"Kocharyan is accused of large-scale money laundering, abuse of office, and bribery on an especially large scale. He has been brought to the Anti-Corruption Court," Ohanjanyan reported.
On the criminal prosecution of Kocharyan
On August 26, Sedrak Kocharyan, the son of Armenia's second president, Robert Kocharyan, was arrested for two months. On August 25, searches were conducted at addresses belonging to Robert Kocharyan and his family, after which Kocharyan was taken to the Anti-Corruption Committee.
The Anti-Corruption Committee of Armenia reported that six individuals had been detained as part of the criminal investigation, including the former president, his son, and others involved in criminal schemes.
The Prosecutor General's Office of Armenia then announced that on August 24, it had opened a public criminal prosecution against second president Robert Kocharyan for three counts of abuse of office, two counts of accepting a bribe on an especially large scale, and four counts of money laundering on an especially large scale.
"Criminal prosecution has been initiated against nine more individuals, including his son, Sedrak Kocharyan, former Defense Minister S.S. (Serzh Sargsyan held this position in 2000–2007), former Prime Minister A.M. (Andranik Margaryan was Prime Minister in 2000–2007), former Mayor of Yerevan G.B. (Gagik Beglaryan) and other persons,” the prosecutor’s office noted.
