Ecotourism, religious tourism and IT should bring more tourists to Armenia
YEREVAN, March 15. /ARKA/. Arsen Gasparyan, Chief Adviser to Armenian Prime Minister, told a tourism conference today that the country needs to revise its approaches to the development of the tourism industry.

Speaking at the conference titled ‘Tourism and Film Industry: Prospects for Cooperation" he said Armenia is not only an open-air museum. ‘After the velvet revolution Armenia has come into the limelight of foreign mass media,” said Gasparyan.

According to the premier’s advisor, this is especially relevant given the fact that Armenia was recognized by The Economist as the Country of the Year.

"Armenians are a hospitable, kind nation with a rich cultural and historical heritage. Here one can watch all 4 seasons at the same time, there are very interesting sights that are still unknown not only to tourists, but also to local residents," said Gasparyan.

According to him, the main emphasis should be put on ecotourism, religious tourism and IT tourism. He said the majority of the US population are Protestants, who actively travel and spend up to $10,000 per visit. According to him, with the correct positioning of the religious and cultural heritage of Armenia, this stream can be directed to the country.

"Armenia is also attractive to IT investors, since it was a center of science and engineering since Soviet times. Now Armenia is experiencing a new revival in this sector; there are brilliant talents, programmers,  strong educational traditions and the government’s readiness to assist investors," said Gasparyan.

According to the Tourism Committee, the number of tourist visits to Armenia in the first 9 months of 2018 increased by 8.8% compared to the same period in 2017 to 1,275,209 visitors. --0--
