Expert: infringement on consumers’ rights commonplace in Armenia

Consumers’ rights are infringed everywhere in Armenia, Lusine Yagubyan, the chair of the Consumer Rights Protection Organization, said on Tuesday in Novosti International Press Center.
YEREVAN, March 15. /ARKA/. Consumers’ rights are infringed everywhere in Armenia, Lusine Yagubyan, the chair of the Consumer Rights Protection Organization, said on Tuesday in Novosti International Press Center.

She blamed consumers for this situation saying it is their own fault – they are not aware of their rights and obligations.

Yagubyan said that nongovernmental organizations are not able to protect consumers’ rights without high public awareness.

Karen Chilingaryan, deputy chairman of the organization, said that very often shops refuse to take sold goods back in a clear breach of the law on protection of consumers’ rights.

He said that consumers can appeal to the Consumer Rights Protection Organization, which obliges shops to take goods back. If the organization’s efforts produce no effect, complainants can appeal to court.

He also pointed out that not a single shop has been punished defrauding with short weight.

Chilingaryan said that the organization is monitoring shops to reveal incorrect scales there.

The World Consumer Rights Day is marked every year on March 15.

In 1961, U.S. President John Kennedy, speaking before the Congress, specified six basic consumer rights, later known as The Consumer Bill of Rights – the right to be safe, the right to be informed, the right to be heard, the right, the right to education and the right to choice.

Later, Consumer International organization added the right to healthy environment to this row.

From 1983 till now the day is marked under the United Nations’ auspices. -0-
