Amount of plastic card transactions grow 39.6% to 182.2 billion in 2nd q 2011

Some 3,591,234 transactions totaling about 182.2 billion were effected in Armenia in the second quarter of this year by using all types of plastic cards.
YEREVAN, September 8. /ARKA/. Some 3,591,234 transactions totaling about 182.2 billion were effected in Armenia in the second quarter of this year by using all types of plastic cards.

According to the information the Central Bank of Armenia has provided to ARKA News Agency, the amount of card transactions grew by AMD 52 billion or 39.6%, compared with the same period a year earlier, and the number of transactions rose 28.7% or by 800,988.

The regulator says non-cash plastic card operations totaled more than AMD 14.6 billion and made up 8% of all the operations carried out by using plastic cards.

Operations carried out via Internet exceeded AMD 2.5 billion, of which electronic trade deals amounted to more than AMD 0.4 billion.

Some 1,516,616 operations worth 58.9 billion were carried out by using local ArCa cards in the 2nd Q 2011 - 15% year-on-year growth in amount and 14.8% increase in numbers.

Some 1,257,119 transactions worth AMD 80 billion were effected by using international VISA cards – 62% year-on-year growth (by AMD 30.7 billion).
The amount of transactions operated via international MasterCard grew 40% or by AMD 7.5 billion to AMD 26 billion. Some 544,949 transactions were operated via MasterCard over the mentioned period of this year.

Some 272,550 operations worth AMD 16.7 billion were carried out in the 2nd Q 2011 by using other international plastic cards (year-on-year growth by AMD 5.6 billion).

According to the central bank’s report, the number of active local cards ArCa increased by 16,112 or 5% over the second quarter, compared with the first quarter, to 334,328.

The number of international cards increased 6% or by 486,952 over the second quarter.

In particular, the number of VISA cards increased by 5.7% or 16,821 to 313,688.

Remarkable is that the number of MasterCards rose by 9,325 or 7.3% to 136,110, while other international cards together increased by 1,686 or 4.7%.

Some 20 commercial banks of Armenia provided and served plastic cards in the second quarter of this year.
