Elections to Yerevan Council of Elders set for May 14
YEREVAN, February 16. /ARKA/. The Armenian government has decided today that elections to the Yerevan Council of Elders (legislative body) that in turn elects the mayor of the capital, will be held on May 14.

According to the minister of territorial administration David Lokyan, the election date is set based on the requirements of the law "On Local Self-Government."  Besides,  the term in office of the current Council of Elders expires by that time.

According to the new Constitution of Armenia, the Yerevan Council of Elders will now be elected for a five year term,  up from current  4 years.

The Council of Elders consists of 65 people, who are elected solely by party lists. If a party or an alliance of parties gains more than 50% of the vote, the first number in  the party list becomes automatically mayor of Yerevan. Otherwise, the mayor is to be chosen  by the Council of Elders.

The Republican Party of Armenia controls 42 seats in the current Council of Elders, won in the previous elections held in 2013 at 464 polling stations in 12 administrative districts of the Armenian capital.  The Prosperous Armenia controls  17 seats and Barev, Yerevan (Hello Yerevan) bloc-  6 seats.-- 0--
