YEREVAN, April 25. /ARKA/. The government of Armenia decided today to release $133,300 for the Chess Federation, headed by former president Serzh Sargsyan. Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Gabriel Ghazaryan said the money will be spent on preparing Armenia’s best chess player Levon Aronyan for fighting for the champion’s title.

Aronyan is a three-time Olympic chess champion, winner of the world team championship, World Cup and is ranked by FIDE as the 4th best chess players in the world.

"We believe that Levon Aronyan is the chess player who can fight for the title," said Ghazaryan. The minister also noted that for the first time the government officially allocates funds to the Chess Federation for the preparation of an applicant.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, in turn, noted that such issues were traditionally resolved by a phone call to wealthy individuals, who were told to release money.

“It was a bad mechanism. I believe that our position should be the following - we will finance those athletes whom we consider important,” said Pashinyan.

He said  it is the duty of the government to pay for the preparation of Aronyan, who has unprecedented services to the state.

Pashinyan stressed that the athletes are Armenian guys who, thanks to their work, have reached world historical heights. State policy should be to support them, assess their merits and create all conditions for encouraging young people. - 0—
