The leaders of several former Soviet republics united in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), scheduled to meet in Astana on November 8, will have to choose a successor to Yuri Khachaturov, who served until lately as secretary general of the Russia-led organization.
Yuri Khachaturov, who was dismissed on October 30, has been charged by Armenian law-enforcement authorities with inciting a coup in Armenia in connection with the March 1, 2008 post-presidential election crackdown on opposition protesters, when eight civilians and two police officers were killed.
The duties of the secretary general were handed to Valery Semerikov, Khachaturov’s deputy.
Yuri Ushakov, an aide to Russian president, said to TASS news agency that three candidates (options) were being considered for this position.
