YEREVAN, July 8. /ARKA/. Aram Simonyan, head of the Yerevan State University, speaking Friday at a news conference, attributed his reelection to positive changes in the university for the recent years.
On June 21, Simonyan was reelected via secret vote at a session of the university’s council headed by Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan.
Sixty members of the council voted for Simonyan, seven cast their votes against him and two ballots were announced invalid.
Simonyan, who have been heading the university since 2006, will remain in office for another five years.
He said that, as a rule, chancellors are not being elected on other merits.
“I was elected through secret vote,” he said. “It means I have proved to be worthy… However, it doesn’t mean that there are no faults in the university.”
Simonyan said that he accepts criticism, but doesn’t like groundless statements.
He said some media outlets accused him of mismanagement, but “the results of the vote showed the opposite.”
Simonyan also found it unnecessary to explain why the election was uncontested.
