State Department concerned over preservation of Armenian cultural heritage in Azerbaijani-controlled territories
In its 2021 Report on International Religious Freedom the US Department of State refers to a Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) resolution on “Humanitarian consequences of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan / Nagorno-Karabakh conflict” that condemned the damage “deliberately caused to Armenian cultural heritage during the 6-week war (in 2020), and what appeared to be the deliberate shelling of the [Holy Savior Cathedral] in Shushi and the destruction or damage of other churches and cemeteries during and after the conflict.

Speaking on Tuesday at a press conference in Yerevan, Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) Minister of Education, Science and Culture Lusine Karakhanyan said thousands of Armenian historical and cultural monuments in the territories that came under the control of Azerbaijan after the war in autumn 2020 are under threat of destruction.
