An Azerbaijani serviceman has been detained in Armenia after an Armenian citizen was shot in the leg in the village of Shaki, in the Syunik region, the National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia reported on Thursday.

YEREVAN, October 1. /ARKA/. An Azerbaijani serviceman has been detained in Armenia after an Armenian citizen was shot in the leg in the village of Shaki, in the Syunik region, the National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia reported on Thursday.

Earlier, ArmLur.am reported, citing its own sources, that an Azerbaijani national had entered the village of Shaki, shot a local resident in the leg, and was subsequently detained. There was no official confirmation of these details at the time.

According to the NSS statement, on September 29, Azerbaijan's State Security Service informed Armenia's NSS that a serviceman from an Azerbaijani military unit had left his duty station under unknown circumstances.

"It was considered possible that he might have illegally crossed the state border into Armenia. Subsequently, the competent authorities of Armenia and Azerbaijan conducted appropriate search operations," the Armenian NSS stated.

The agency reported that on October 1 at 14:15, the 112 Operational Management Center of the Armenian Ministry of Internal Affairs received a report that an Armenian citizen had been shot in the leg in the village of Shaki, Syunik region.

According to the agency, it was established that the crime was committed by an Azerbaijani serviceman; he has been detained.
